MrSpace86 | What Apollo 13 artifacts are held in private collections? Share your pieces... |
David Carey | A favorite collecting focus for me. Top photo: - Ex-Fred Haise flown cocoa pack and certification letter
- Ex-National Air and Space Museum large flown storage pouch and in-situ NASA photo of same from closeout.
- Ex-Deke Slayton flown heatshield plug
- Ex-Ed Gibson crew-signed cover postmarked 4/11/70
- Ex-Frank Bryan Aquarius crew-signed flown netting presentation
Bottom photo: - Ex-Jim Lovell backup crew presentation; mostly spare/unflown foil decals from the CM/LM but a couple flown labels in there too.

413 is in | Great thread! Here's a few items from my collection: Deke Slayton's MOCR badge Sy Liebergot's splashdown flag from his EECOM console Ex Karl Henize crew signed cover |
Moonmichael | I have the great Apollo 13 ASF acrylic too, an Apollo 13 training LM cue card from Fred Haise and James McDivitt's Apollo 13 MOCR badge. |
Charlie16 | Some small pieces in Italy. I have: - Apollo 13 Flown Netting (LM Aquarius) acrylic COA from Freddo.
- Apollo 13 Flown Shim.
- Apollo 13 Flown Utility Light Cord acrylic.

ilbasso | Flight Readiness Review badge: Radiation Control Center badge: Post-Launch System Safing parking permits: Lunar Receiving Lab badge: Planned EVA traverses: Lovell has signed, "We would have found Cone Crater!" Haise adds: "Wish we would have got a second chance." |
David Carey | Well, this one is just for amusement mostly. Historical significance is certainly open for debate. In cleaning up today, I found a forgotten RCA News Apollo 13 PR piece; not so interesting in itself but I then started reading all the notes made on the back. Seems this copy belonged to whoever was responsible for an A13 luncheon, with lots of notes about organizing logistics for an army of sandwiches. The image shows the back cover - with the front cover as a small inset - and in red I've highlighted the crew's seeming preference for Ham & Cheese Loaf on Rye (Lovell and Swigert) with Haise making a bold turn from his shipmates with Smoked Turkey. We also learn of the mission-critical choice of Oscar Mayer meats (2400 slices!) and Imperial Margerine (sic) with Cheddar Cheese. |

Apparently Feta was Not an Option. |
atpowell | My favorite flown item: a piece of commander Lovell's PLSS backpack he inscribed "Piece of Apollo 13 PLS backpack — for use on the lunar surface." Different from many flown artifacts, this one has such a story. I could only imagine the emotions he felt as they were closing out the LM, seeing his PLSS and making the conscious decision to cut off a piece to take home. |
gliderpilotuk | The piece de resistance of my collection: the Rescue decal from the door of the Apollo 13 CM. Approx 10 inches by 3 inches. And overlaid onto a photo of the CM: |
David Carey | Fred Haise's training-used CSM Systems Handbook from Apollo 13, a massive set of schematic foldouts covering virtually all aspects of CSM design. Inset shows the detail of O2 Tank 2 and the Heater Thermostats therein (the hook-shaped devices) which failed. Note the 28V rating on the diagram; the un-documented change to 65V for the heaters was found to have welded shut the older 28V thermostats still in place, causing massive O2 tank overheating and eventually the mission-ending explosion. |
stsmithva | It's been interesting and fun to see the variety of great items from this specific mission in cS members' collections. Please keep them coming! |
Sy Liebergot | I believe the tank notation of 114 watts @ 28 vdc is the heater rating. There is no thermostat rating labeled. We would be interested in the current draw of the heaters when activated, not the static value of the thermostat (P=VI;I = P/V; I=114w/28vdc= 4.1 amps) |
David Carey | All are Apollo 13-relevant but only the Robert Heselmeyer badge was mission-used of course. Heselmeyer was TELMU in Mission Control when the O2 tank exploded, two stations from EECOM Sy Liebergot (Sy - thanks for the correction above). The LM Partial Pressure meter is a flight spare but identical to that used by the crew to monitor rising CO2 levels in Aquarius. The instrument cover has been signed by Fred Haise with his first words back to Houston ("Boy, that is great") after CO2 levels were confirmed under control. The unflown LiOH filter canister shown was like that used to for the improvised CO2 scrubber in the LM and retains the original factory wrapper. |
holcombeyates | With all the museums shut due to the coronavirus, it is a great shame that we won't be able to see some of the Apollo 13 hardware on display around the 50th anniversary. How about a virtual museum with cS members showing their favourite Apollo 13 pieces from their collections? Editor's note: Threads merged. |
Chuckster01 | My addition is a small but nice collection includes Jack Lousma's console-used Apollo 13 LM Lunar Surface Checklist, an Apollo 13 checklist from the movie "Apollo 13," a crew patch and card from Fred Haise (not flown), and an ASF Apollo 13 Lucite. This is how it was displayed: This is how it looks now: And in another Fred Haise adventure that is Bob Sieck's ALT Flight crew mug. A gift from Bob who is the treasurer for the American Space Museum. |
Rocket Chris | Fragments of parachute, command module, lunar module, and a Beta cloth as well as Apollo 13 signed litho customly framed. |
holcombeyates | A few Apollo 13 artefacts I would like to shaare: - MCC badge for John Young, Apollo 13's backup commander who had worked tirelessly in the simulators to develop the new procedures necessary to get home.
- Jack Swigert's g meter cover from Odyssey and his velcro watch strap worn during the mission.
- Lastly, a splashdown cap and jacket worn on the recovery carrier, the Iwo Jima
